The Cathedral and the Bell Tower
Caorle Cathedral: A True Historical and Religious Symbol
The Cathedral of Santo Stefano is one of Caorle's most precious treasures, dating back to 1038. Its Romanesque architecture, enriched with Byzantine influences, features a simple yet majestic façade that immediately conveys a sense of grandeur and solemnity. Inside, visitors can admire numerous artistic masterpieces, including the 15th-century wooden Crucifix and the Pala d'Oro, an extraordinary example of Venetian goldsmithing from the 13th-14th century, symbolizing the craftsmanship of the era.
Next to the Cathedral is the Liturgical Museum, which is definitely worth a visit!
However, the Cathedral is not just a museum of sacred art: in the left nave, the apse houses a historically significant artifact. A Roman funerary altar, dating back to the 1st century AD, found in the area and belonging to the Licovi family, is preserved at the base of the tabernacle, testifying to Caorle's long history as a crossroads of cultures and civilizations. The Cathedral is open to visitors every day during daylight hours, except during religious ceremonies (in summer it remains open until 11 PM).
The Bell Tower: A City Icon with Breathtaking Views
Next to the Cathedral stands the cylindrical bell tower, one of Caorle's most recognizable symbols. At 42 meters high, this bell tower is a rare example of medieval architecture in Italy, with its distinctive cylindrical shape and conical spire that make it unique. Dating back to the 11th century, it is one of the few bell towers of this type remaining in Italy and offers spectacular views of the city and the coast. It is accessible by climbing its 80 steps, even by reservation.
Curiosities
One of the most fascinating features of the bell tower is its slight tilt towards the east, visible to the naked eye. This phenomenon is due to the clayey terrain underneath, prone to water infiltration, which has caused slight subsidence over the centuries.
Did you know that it is even "set on fire" every year on the Saturday and Sunday of the second week of July? It is an unmissable event linked to an ancient religious ritual.
